CNC Heads Sports/Saloon Car Championship – Anglesey Rounds 3, 4 & 5

We go to Anglesey this weekend with three drivers sharing the lead of the Championship, after the opening double-header at Oulton Park.

Simon Allaway’s Lotus Esprit won both of its races outright, so he heads Class A, while Chris Roberts performed similarly in Class D, debuting his BMW M4, which he also drove to and from the circuit! While from Class E Paul Rotheroe’s Citroen Xsara is also unbeaten and is the third of our joint leaders.

It's a 36 car entry so all classes race together, so in Class A Allaway is up against Piers Grange’s 2.2 litre turbo charged Escort RSR, Garry Wardle’s Audi A3 TCR and Ryan Nelson’s Ginetta G56 GTA. Championship sponsor Ric Wood has entered a 3.4 Ford Capri GAA for his seasonal debut and Duncan Aukland makes his return too with the “Proton Putra.”

Former XR racer Jason Hennefer will hopefully be back having rebuilt his Fiesta ST180, following it’s crash in race one at Oulton and hopefully Ash Hicklin will be out again too in his Bentley, having missed the second of the Oulton races. Finally Championship newcomer Aled Dark is bringing his 2 litre turbocharged Darrian T90 too, having previously raced a supercharged MGB GTV8 in the Welsh Sports Saloons.

Class B could well provide the outright winners, Roddie Paterson’s Caterham C400, Ben Roberts’ Locost 7 and the Westfield Aero’s of Connor and Alek Modro all in contention. Paterson was challenging Allaway in both races at Oulton, but failed to record a finish, out of fuel in race one and retiring with a clutch issue at the end of race two.

Roberts was second overall in the first race, but had to retire with contact damage in race two, while fourth on his Westfield debut for Alek Modro, turned to disappointment, when he broke his steering after contact in race two. But there was no luck for Connor either. A seized wheel cylinder forced him to miss the opener, while in race two he pitted with brake problems. Deri Davies’ Darrian and Jamie Cryer’s Ginetta G20 should be in contention too, but it’s Bob Buckby’s Caterham that currently heads the class from, Davies and Ben Roberts. Mark Primett’s Banks Lotus Europa completes the class line-up.

There was some terrific action in Class D as team mates Chris Roberts and Carl Bennett duelled for the advantage in both races in their BMW’s. It was Roberts’s M4 that came out on top in both races, so Bennett’s M3 has a score to settle. 2024 Champion Steven Parker is currently fourth in Class with his Fiesta ST, but he has to see off the BMW’s of Philip White and Jon Madoc-Jones to secure a class podium, as well as seasonal debutant Oliver Thomas’ Subaru Impreza. Simon Gravelly’s VW Golf GTi is back after debuting at Oulton and Zack Booth is due out for the first time too in his Renault Megane R26, along with the returning TR7 V8 of Ralph Underwood.

With Paul Rotheroe’s domination in Class E, the rest are likely to be fighting for second place. Currently that place belongs to Matthew Jones’ Ford Focus, but Rob Phillips also makes a seasonal return in his Honda Civic and is sure to challenge. Julian Wood’s BMW Compact and the Ford Fiesta ST150’s of Louie Dobson’s and Nick Haynes complete the class.

In Class F Helen Allen leads the way in her Fiesta Zetec S, she has Oulton Park rivals Errol Taylor and Jonathan Lee back to challenge in their respective Toyota Yaris T Sport and Mini Cooper, but after problems at Oulton with his Peugeot, Robert Wakelin joins the class too with a Honda Civic.

Qualifying is at 11.50 on Saturday for 20 minutes, with race one at 16.05, and on Sunday there’s race two at 11.30 and race three at 15.45, all races are 20 minutes duration.
